Chapel pews for sale

Chapel PewsThe School is nearing completion of a seven-year project to refurbish the Chapel. The project started with the removal of the white-wash to return the walls to the original brickwork. The new gallery was then erected and on this the wonderful new Mander organ installed. We are now embarking on the final phase, which involves the removal of the existing floor, installation of under-floor heating and retiling. New oak pews designed and produced by Luke Hughes will be installed and the Chapel reopened for September and the start of the 150th anniversary celebrations. The overall effect of the refurbishment will be spectacular; there will be increased light in the building and the full effect of the pillars will be seen for the first time in a century. The new seats and pews will be laid out to the existing collegiate arrangement but there will be scope to move them to face either the altar or organ, enabling the Chapel to be used more often by more people.

We need to dispose of the existing pews and a number of people have expressed an interest in them. We therefore intend to sell the pews on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis. A list of the pews and their minimum purchase price is below and those interested should note that the condition of the pews varies as would be expected of old furniture from a school chapel. Some have been designed for their location and so, for example, are uneven at the feet or have parts cut-out to work round the structure of the building. The sale is therefore ‘as seen’ or ‘as allocated’ but anyone interested in buying a pew may wish to visit to select their preferred choice. The minimum price is quoted because the proceeds of the sale will go towards the Chapel project and so if you feel able to offer a little more your contributions will be going to a good cause. A small plaque will come with each pew which may be positioned on the pew when it reaches its new home. Those buying pews will be encouraged to arrange for collection during the week commencing 23rd March but we may be able to deliver to addresses within a reasonable distance of Cranleigh. The cost of delivery will be £60. If you are interested in buying a pew please contact Diana Pettifer on schooloffice@cranleigh.org, complete the attached ‘Request slip ’ and return it to her along with a cheque made out to Cranleigh School in settlement.
