Come and play OC Golf

With over 200 members and a busy annual fixture list including 14 matches or competitions, the Old Cranleighan Golf Society is open to all OCs. There is ample opportunity for golfers of all ages and abilities, and we now can boast a ladies section who take an active part . We welcome new members.

Last month, the elite section of the Society followed last year’s success in reaching the semi-final of the prestigious Halford Hewitt Cup by winning three matches this year and narrowly losing to the eventual winners ( Bradfield ) in the quarter finals, a competition played in glorious weather at Royal St Georges in Sandwich and Royal Cinque Ports at Deal. With several young players having made their debuts over the last couple of years the future is looking good, but there is always room for low handicap golfers to make the team.

Why join the OCGS?

1.Membership of the OC Golf Society is incredibly good value – free up to the age of 25, £25 pa up until the age of 30 and then £50 pa thereafter. You don’t have to be a member of a club or have an official handicap, but it does help if you do .

2. It gives you access to some of the South-East’s premier golf courses where our traditional fixture ensure we get a warm welcome. Such golf courses include Walton Heath, Royal Cinque Ports, St Georges Hill, West Sussex, Royal Wimbledon, Royal Ashdown, Woking and The Berkshires.

3. As a member of the Society you are encouraged to bring along friends to the Invitation days , ideally other OCs but members non-OC guests are equally welcome. A great way to have a low-budget day’s golf with your mates at a cracking golf course.

4 .Selection for the Club matches is normally on a first come-first served basis so you will probably get a game at your chosen venue. We are not a cliquey Society .

5. A major annual event is the weekend at Royal Cinque Ports ( Deal ) in October, where we normally attract about 30 OC golfers for a 36-hole match against the Club, followed by a formal dinner at the Clubhouse and participation in a competition at RCP the following morning. Probably not one for teetotallers -beware !

6.Funding is available for students or those who have genuine financial worries.

In short, we play competitive golf at all levels but principally we play for fun. If you haven’t joined already please contact the Hon Sec Tony Whitty at twhitty999@gmail.com or via the website www.ocgs.co.uk
