Oldest OC dies aged 103

It is with sadness we have to report the death on September 6th of our oldest OC, John Wilkins (1&4 South 1938) at the age of 103.

He arrived at Cranleigh in 1936 and recalled the Munich Crisis in September 1938 when the boys on their return for the Michaelmas term were made to dig trenches on the North Field in preparation for the war which everyone expected but which was eventually delayed by the Munich Agreement. John’s time at Cranleigh was prematurely ended by an outbreak of mumps which meant everyone was sent home early.

His death leaves Stratton Holland (West 1940) as the oldest OC and we believe the last who was at Cranleigh before WW2. Stratton, who has lived in Canada for many years, is 102.
