A fire on the evening of Thursday April 2nd completely destroyed the old pavilion on the Weston Green Sports Club which was bought by the OC Society in 2021. The main OC Club was unaffected.
The fire broke out around 6pm and the almost 100-year-old timber club was engulfed within minutes. Twelve fire engines from Surrey and London fire brigades attended the scene but were unable to prevent the entire building being engulfed. The emergency services worked well into the early hours of the morning to bring the blaze under control and we are extremely grateful to them for all their hard work.
The police have confirmed that the fire was started deliberately. Several youths were seen on the roof shortly before the blaze broke out.
The clubhouse was built around 1930 and was in use until around 2022. It was in a poor state when we bought the site and it soon became apparent that the cost of bringing it up to the minimum legal requirements was prohibitive and it was taken out of use. There have been ongoing problems with youths breaking in and vandalising the building despite our ongoing efforts to make it secure.
The electricity was cut off for a number of local properties as a result of the fire and we apologise to them for the inconvenience caused.
