Jolyon Palmer clinches the GP2 title

Palmer celebrates winning in Sochi

Jolyon Palmer (North 2009) completed an outstanding season by clinching the GP2 title with a win in the first race at Sochi at the Russian Grand Prix weekend.  The GP2 circuit is the feeder competition for Formula One and he is now expected to be in the frame for a race seat in F1.

Palmer’s victory makes him the first British GP2 champion since Lewis Hamilton in 2006, and six of the previous nine title winners have made the jump to F1.  It was the 23-year-old’s fourth win of the season, and 11th podium of his fourth campaign in GP2.

“We’re going to have to wait for a few weeks and see what happens, but I feel ready for it,” he told the Daily Mail.  “I’m driving at the top of my game right now”.

“GP2 is the perfect series to feed into Formula One – the same tyres, the same tracks, the cars are even now a similar speed, especially into the corners”.

“I feel absolutely ready for it and I am confident it can happen.”

“We fought for every pole and every feature race win. We barely made any mistakes. It’s been an absolute dream season and to be champion at the earliest
opportunity for me is the icing on the cake.”
