A TRIPLET TANDEM, A DOUBLE TANDEM, A SINGLE BICYCLE 3-2-1

Angus Young (Loveday, 2009-14) writes: The cycling was an end to end trip from John O’Groats to Land’s End, named Exercise Blue JOGLE.  It involved six of us cycling on a triplet, a tandem and a single bike. We called it 3-2-1.

Over the summer holidays and into the Michaelmas Term, many Old Cranleighans have been taking part in all sorts of fund-raising events for a variety of extremely worthy causes. Information about what others have been up to will be available in the 2015 edition of The Old Cranleighan, to be delivered in early January.

Blue Jogle was a complete success. Having finally sorted out vehicle issues we left Harrogate for the Scotland in a team member’s family land rover on the 11th. This seemed to be at least plan D by that stage but this did not stop us.

Cycling started on the 12th and a half day was covered, complete with our first puncture; this was a good indication of what would lie ahead. Within a week of cycling through the most amazing scenery we were out of Scotland and on our way through England. We then headed through the lakes and carried on south to a friend’s house in Shropshire where the team enjoyed a well-earned rest day.

From Shropshire we headed through Bristol down to Somerset and then Devon where we encountered some torrential rain; this complete with the hilly countryside led to a few tough days. We were now on the home straight and powered through Cornwall; however five miles away from our goal the rear derailleur of the tandem got completely mangled so the final push was completed in a single speed.  Despite this we managed arrive at Land’s End on the 25th. The triplet bike was then returned to Blackpool and the team enjoyed a wonderful meal cooked by some amazing parents and a few drinks in Harrogate to celebrate.

Overall 1,022 miles were covered on the triplet, the tandem and the single bike with many a mechanical failure along the way and great fun was had by all. My personal favourite leg was going over Glen Coe from Fort William, then down past Loch Lomond to Helensburgh.

Overall we have so far raised over £2,000 pounds for ABF, the soldiers’ charity. Most of that is on the JustGiving website but there is also some cash collected on route.

There are many photos of us on Facebook. If you are that way inclined you can find them by searching Ex. Blue Jogle 321. There are also a few photos on the JustGiving website which is also under the name Ex. Blue Jogle.
